## Frequently asked questions

### Why do AI companies retire old models, and how should I prepare?
Providers run each model on expensive GPU capacity, so they eventually shut down older versions to free that capacity for newer ones. A retirement usually comes with several months of notice, but after the date, requests to the old model name fail or are redirected to a replacement that may behave differently. To prepare, avoid hard-coding a model name in many places and keep it in one configuration setting. Pin a specific dated version when you need stable behavior, and subscribe to the provider's deprecation notices. Keep a small set of test prompts so you can quickly check a replacement model for changes in tone, format and accuracy before the old one disappears. Treat model upgrades as routine maintenance, not as emergencies.

### How often do new LLMs launch, and how fast are they improving?
New models arrive constantly. The major labs ship a notable release every few months, often with smaller updates in between, and open-weight models from companies such as Meta, Mistral, DeepSeek and Alibaba add to the pace, so something noteworthy is announced almost every week. Capability has risen quickly while prices have fallen: a task that needed a flagship model a year or two ago can often be done by a much cheaper model today. For you this means two things. Do not lock your product to one model name, because it will be replaced or retired, and re-test your choice every few months, since a newer model may be better, cheaper or both.

### How do I know whether a new model is actually cheaper or better than the one I use?
An announcement tells you a model exists, not whether it is worth switching to. The practical check has two parts. First, compare cost: find the model in the price comparison (/), paste a typical prompt and expected response length, and see the per-request and monthly cost next to your current model. Second, compare quality on your own task, because public benchmarks rarely match your data. Run a small, repeatable set of real prompts through both models and judge the answers. A model that is 40 percent cheaper but needs a retry on every tenth request may cost more overall, so measure both price and success rate before you migrate.

### What do names like mini, flash, turbo, pro or opus mean?
Providers usually sell each model family in several sizes, and the name signals the trade-off. Labels such as mini, nano, flash, lite, haiku or small generally mean a smaller, faster and cheaper model that is good for simple, high-volume work like classification, extraction and short chat replies. Mid-sized names such as sonnet or standard balance cost and quality. Labels such as pro, opus, ultra or the plain flagship name mean the largest and most capable model, with the highest price and slower responses, suited to hard reasoning, long documents and difficult code. Naming is not standardized across companies, so a version number or a date in the name matters too. Always compare actual prices and test on your own task.

### What do "preview", "beta" and "experimental" mean for a new model?
These labels tell you a model is not yet a finished, supported product. A preview or beta model is available for testing, but its behavior, pricing, rate limits and even its name can change, and it may be withdrawn on short notice. An experimental model is the least stable of the three and is often meant for feedback rather than production. Providers sometimes apply stricter usage limits or exclude preview models from their service guarantees. They are a good way to try new capabilities early and judge whether they are worth adopting, but avoid building a customer-facing feature that depends on one without a fallback. Wait for the general availability label, or keep a stable model ready to switch to.
